Winter Game Birds
Artist's Note: Winter Game Birds was inspired by the 18th century French Sevrès Service for Cardinal de Rohan and features delicate reserves of game birds linked by burnished 24-karat gold oak leaves. In those days porcelain was so rare that it was only sold to royalty. The European factories would decorate the rim of the plate with one color and trim it with gold. They would “reserve” spaces around the rim to be painted by the traveling artists who would visit the factory. I loved the idea of the “reserves” and wanted to create a pattern incorporating them. My vision was a red rim with cool winter bird scenes painted in the reserves to calm the red. Winter Games Birds still remains one of my most popular patterns. -Lynn Chase
